June 29, 2008
by Che Oyimnatumba

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has blamed the leaders of Niger Delta for the ills bedeviling the region. According to a communiqué released at the end of ACF meeting in Kaduna, “ Some States in Niger Delta took home as much as N42 billion while many of the non-oil producing states went home with a paltry N6 billion. If these huge resources have not translated into developmental projects…the managers of these resources in the Niger Delta are more culpable.

Nelson Mandela rocks in London as The world Celebrates his 90 Birthday
 Nelson Mandela
Great Leader our Nelson Mandela..
Hollywood star Will Smith led a London crowd of 46,664 in a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to Nelson Mandela on Friday at a party for the South African prisoner, president and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Nelson Mandela had a smile and a message. as Smith introduced Mandela to the London crowd celebrating Mandela's life with the words "The one, the only, the birthday boy, Nelson Mandela, Nelson Mandelaaaaaaaaaa."
.
London was the scene of a concert 20 years ago to celebrate Mandela's 70th and to raise awareness of his imprisonment.

Mandela told cheering fans, "Your voices carried across the water to inspire us in our prison cells far away. Tonight, we can stand before you free."We are honored to be back in London for this wonderful occasion."But even as we celebrate, let us remind ourselves that our work is far from complete."Where there is poverty and sickness, including AIDS, where human beings are being oppressed, there is more work to be done. Our work is for freedom for all. As Mandela walked on stage, Smith led the crowd in a chorus of "Happy Birthday."

Proceeds from the concert in London's Hyde Park will go toward the 46664 Campaign, which Mandela founded in 2003 to raise awareness about the impact of AIDS, especially in Africa, and to promote HIV-prevention measures around the world.

Zimbabwe's Mugabe Presses Friday Vote as Violence Spreads
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he has not ruled out negotiations with the opposition MDC but elections must go ahead on Friday to meet a legal obligation. Meanwhile, reports are coming in from several parts of Zimbabwe that violence is continuing against opposition supporters. Peta Thornycroft reports for VOA from Harare.

President Mugabe, 84, made it clear at a rally Tuesday that he won't refuse to negotiate with the opposition party, The Movement for Democratic Change, but he determined to hold the poll on Friday because, in his words, there is "only one thing for us to accomplish... it's the legal process on the 27th of June."

TV viewers moving to the Internet.
Traditional TV loosing viewers to the Internet and online media.

I have read a lot of articles lately talking about traditional media loosing its viewership to the internet.
Of course, the provision off an alternative news and entertainment source or media has reduced the viewership and following of traditional media, but the concern here is will this so called "new media" takeover from the traditional media we grew up watching?

I don't think we will see that anytime soon, the Internet still hasn't penetrated places like Africa as it has done in Europe and America, so at least not for Africa but its still the way forward and TV and other sources of news and entertainment should prepare and jump in first to penetrate the online viewer and readership before their competitors.
The traditional TV networks shouldnt slack, they should also innovate and embrace the rapid technological advancement or else be left behind. As viewers move more towards the Internet, the TV channels and Radio channels should also establish an online service and make it a little more interesting than traditional viewership by adding interactivity, view-on-demand and many other goodies that the web2.0 generation comes with. Many live Internet TV broadcasting services are emerging. Companies like Brightcove, PPstream, TVKoo and AfricaMars.
TVKoo is a Chinese P2P online TV service that broadcasts a variety of TV channels online. While AfricaMars, a newly launched service is focussed on African TV channels. It also uses p2p technology similar to TVkoo,

AfricaMars is currently talking with TV stations from African countries like Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and many other African Countries to be able to transmit their programs on the internet.
These services provide TV channels with a great opportunity to catch up and reach viewers on the internet, thereby increasing the TV channels viewership and also revenue.

Mugabe vows opposition will never rule Zimbabwe
By Reuters
Friday, June 15, 2008
President Robert Mugabe vowed on Saturday that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) would never rule Zimbabwe and that he was prepared to fight to keep them from taking power.

 Robert Mugabei
Robert Gabriel Mugabe..

We shall never, never accept anything that smells of ... the MDC. These pathetic puppets taking over this country? Let's see. That is not going to happen," he said in a speech at the funeral of a former army general.

"We are prepared to fight for it if we lose it in the same way that our forefathers lost it (to British colonial rule)."

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai will face Mugabe in a run-off presidential election on June 27, after winning the first round in March but without the necessary majority.

Tsvangirai, rights groups and Western powers accuse Mugabe of unleashing a brutal campaign, including using police to harass opponents, to win the run-off.
